Doctor Disney Explains: The Mysterious Birds In The Speakers At Epcot

Imagine yourself having a great day at Epcot and enjoying all that Future World has to offer. You’ve ridden on Spaceship Earth, Test Track, and even Listen to the Land. Now, you’ve realized that 11:00 a.m. has rolled around and you want to head back into World Showcase. It’s a commonly known fact that it is rather peaceful and quiet in the countries during the morning so it’s a great time for a leisurely stroll.

Suddenly though…you pass by the Mexico pavilion and the shrill sound of a squawking bird echoes throughout the quiet skies. You look up, and see not a single bird anywhere near you, and that bird sounded like it was right on your shoulder.

What is going on?

As strange as it may sound, you were not just hearing things. Next time you’re at Epcot, listen closely and you will indeed hear the loud squawking of birds coming out of the speakers surrounding the World Showcase country pavilions. This isn’t done just to get on the nerves of guests, but it’s actually done for a specific reason and it is to help them.

If you’ll notice, the bird sounds are usually the loudest:

  • Around restaurants
  • In places that look like good locations for birds to nest

Disney has purposely designed the speakers in these areas to play the sound of a bird in distress. It will therefore keep birds away from them and allow for guests to eat in peace without being bothered by hungry birds. It will also help keep guests from being used as a personal dumping ground…ahem.

This may sound incredibly strange, but it works. Disney knew what they were doing and these locations in Epcot generally have much fewer birds around than others. You can thank the Imagineers at Disney for this little trick because it will allow you to eat in peace and not have to purchase a new shirt every time you visit Epcot. It may sound annoying, but it’s for your own good.
