The Haunted Mansion Rooms That Never Were At Walt Disney World

At Walt Disney World, there are a number of themed rooms that are great for guests looking for that little something extra in the places where they rest their head and call “home” for a few days. There were Pirate rooms, are Royal rooms, and there area whole host of themed rooms over at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. But did you know there were almost Haunted Mansion rooms?

Yes, Haunted Mansion rooms.

The Pirates of the Caribbean-themed rooms were over at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. The Royal Rooms add even more elegance to Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort.

But, the Haunted Mansion rooms are something that Doctor Disney certainly would have loved to see become a reality.

Back in mid-2010, the idea of new themed rooms to go along with the Pirate rooms came into existence. It wasn’t until a bit later that the Royal Rooms debuted. In April of 2011, Health and Wellness Suites were also called for, but those officially got cancelled later that year.

As for the Haunted Mansion rooms? There was never an official word on what happened to them.

We do know they were supposed to happen as concept images had appeared online.

These images did come directly from Disney in surveys that had gone out to Guests who had traveled to Walt Disney World and stayed on property. Believe it or not, they actually date way back to 2010 so these images have been around for six years now, but nothing has ever come from them.

At the same time, the ideas for the Royal Rooms came about, and those were completed at Port Orleans Riverside in March and April of 2012.

Some early reports about the Haunted Mansion rooms had them having such awesome qualities as:

  • Glowing footprints appearing on the ceiling
  • “Floating” Doom Buggy beds
  • A sliding bookcase that will create a hidden passage to the bathroom
  • Ghostly apparitions appearing in the mirrors to “follow you home”
  • Haunted Mansion wallpaper bedspreads

The concept art shows a lot more to the Haunted Mansion rooms that would have been incredibly awesome.

Just look at the Donald Duck chair coat-hanger and gargoyles holding the over-the-bed lights.

Why couldn’t these happen!?!?

Well, once the surveys taken by Walt Disney World Guests ended up showing more attention given to the Royal Rooms, those got the nod.

With so much attention being given to the Haunted Mansion recently, we can hope that the idea of Haunted Mansion rooms may make a comeback. Perhaps the hundreds of pieces of new Haunted Mansion merchandise and anniversaries may stir them up again.

At least, that’s the hope of us here at Doctor Disney.

  1. I really wish this would happen. Thankfully, no idea is ever dead at Disney Imagineering. 🙂 Any idea what resort these were supposed to end up at?

  2. Wendy J. La says

I’m skeptical of the authenticity of these concept images. When I was working on my Media Arts and Animation degree at The Art Institute of Washington, one of 40 Art Institutes, one of our assignments was to design and model a bedroom. With hundreds of students passing through each of those 40 schools, not to mention all the other animation programs out there, and CG animation software so widely available, how do we know this isn’t fan art? That’s not to say Imagineering didn’t entertain the idea of Haunted Mansion suites, I’m just wondering how we know this is legitimately from WDI.
