15 Things You May Not Have Known About Disney’s ‘Aladdin’

1.) Certain outcomes from “Aladdin” caused a major rift between Robin Williams and Disney. He actually vowed never to work for them again, but things finally got smoothed out and Williams was named a “Disney Legend” in 2009.

2.) Jafar’s character design is actually based on Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty.”

3.) “Aladdin” featured a lot of deleted characters, a deleted script, and a lot of deleted songs. A lot of deleted songs!

4.) Scott Weinger from “Full House” voice Aladdin. In a couple of episodes of “Full House,” the Tanner family goes to Walt Disney World, and Scott Weinger (DJ’s boyfriend Steve) appears dressed as Aladdin in the Magic Kingdom.

5.) Patrick Stewart was the favorite to voice Jafar, but he had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts with “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Stewart called it one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

8.) During the balcony scene, a long-running rumor is that Aladdin whispers to Rajah, “Good teenagers, take off your clothes.” It is simply a misheard line and he actually says, “C’mon…good kitty. Take off and go.”

9.) When Genie dons a Hawaiin shirt and Goofy hat near the end of the film, it’s actually a tribute to Robin Willams’ outfit in a 1989 short called “Back To Neverland” that he filmed for Disney’s MGM Studios.

10.) One of the early ideas for “Aladdin” was to have the street merchant, seen at the beginning of the film, actually end up being a disguised Genie.

11.) Genie’s poofy pants were not too easy to animate correctly, so animator Glen Keane watched music video of MC Hammer and learned the movements of his big pants.

12.) Near the end of the film, Rajah is changing back to his normal self. For a split second, his head is that of Mickey Mouse.

13.) A lot of inspiration for Disney’s “Aladdin” came from “The Thief of Bagdad” which was released in 1940. IN the film was a princess, merchant, Sultan, Jaffar, and an Abu.

14.) Early screenings of “Aladdin” brought forth no applause from audiences after big-time songs. Animators decided to do an inside-joke and have an “Applause” sign flash over Genie’s head at the end of “Friend Like Me.” The joke worked…a lot.

15.) “Aladdin” was 1992’s highest grossing domestic film and it was also the first animated film to take in more than $200 million.

BONUS.) Jafar’s fraternal twin sister, a sorceress named Nasira, is featured as the villain in the video game, “Aladdin in Nasira’s Revenge.” Nasira is voiced by Jodi Benson…who vocied Ariel, “The Little Mermaid.”
