Many were wondering how Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast would do at the box office, especially considering the controversy surrounding it. Well, it seems as if any worry was senseless as opening weekend did very well and broke records.
Not only did Beauty and the Beast do well, but it had the largest March opening of all time. With final numbers due on Monday, Disney’s new live-action remake took in an estimated $170 million during its opening weekend.
Those numbers make it the largest opening weekend of all time in March as it surpassed last year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice which opened with $166 million.
Beauty and the Beast also opened as the seventh largest weekend ever and the largest opening ever for a PG-rated film. Along with that, it also was the:
- Largest Spring opening weekend
- Fourth largest Saturday gross of all time – $62.737 million
- Sixth largest Sunday gross of all time – Estimated $ 43.476million
- Eighth largest theater average
