10 Disney Secrets You May Not Know – Magic Kingdom

Disney Secrets Magic KingdomIt will come as no surprise to just about anyone that knows anything about Disney that there are plenty of secrets to discover. Disney secrets are sometimes as evident as the windows on Main Street U.S.A. or can be as hard to find as some Hidden Mickeys. We all love to learn new hidden gems and that is what this new series of articles will be about…Disney Secrets.

Chances are that…no matter how many articles put into this series by Doctor Disney and the other writers here, we will never actually able to list all the Disney secrets that there are.

Disney secrets can come from the parks, the movies, the cartoons, the characters, the history, the songs, and so much more. That is why they are going to be separated into different articles, put together usually 10 at a time, and given from one location or category at a time.

There are those that will swear these Disney secrets aren’t real, and others who insist they are. Like Imagineers, it’s hard to always get exact answers and fun to imagine.

Some of these you may end up already knowing. Others may be brand new to you. Either way, they are always fun to learn and know and look out for when visiting the parks or watching some Disney movies. For this first article, it is time to learn:

10 Disney Secrets You May Not Know from the Magic Kingdom

1.) Ever notice the brown pavement winding its way through Liberty Square? That actually represents the raw sewage that used to be dumped and washed away in old colonial times. It is also the reason you will not find any restrooms (indoor plumbing) in this land. The bathrooms inside of Columbia Harbour House actually stretch over into Fantasyland.

2.) Yes, there is a system of tunnels underneath the Magic Kingdom. It is one of the best and worst kept Disney secrets. Cast Members use them to get from one land to another without being out of costume.

3.) No trash can will ever be more than 30 steps from a guest. Word has it that Walt Disney himself used to sit at Disneyland and watch how long guests would hold onto a piece of trash before dropping it. The result was 30 steps.

4.) Check out the floor of the lobby next time you’re in Country Bear Jamboree. Millions of claw marks are everywhere from their “rowdy” talent.

5.) Look closely at the ghostly old woman sitting in a rocking chair in the ballroom scene of the Haunted Mansion. She may look familiar to you because the same exact woman appears in mortal form in Carousel of Progress.

6.) Take the time to look at the metal palm trees in Tomorrowland. While they don’t always work the way they did in the past, they used to stay tightly closed at night and in the shade of morning. When the sun hit them, the palm trees would open their branches and spread out. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.

7.) The back half of a plane crash can be seen while riding through the exotic wilderness of the Jungle Cruise. The front half of that plane can actually be found in the “Casablanca” scene of the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

8.) Prince Charming’s Regal Carrousel in Fantasyland has 90 horses for guests to ride on, but only one of them is the favorite of Cinderella. This is one of the Disney secrets that not many may know, but all you’ve got to do is look for the horse with a gold ribbon on its tail and you’ll have found Major.

9.) Many know about the famous two-finger Disney point, but do you know its origins? There are actually two main mindsets behind why Cast Members point with two fingers.

First, Walt Disney was a smoker. When he was standing in the construction of Disneyland and pointing around to where he would want different things located, he would point with two fingers. That was due to their usually being a cigarette between his index and middle fingers.

Second, it’s rather dominating and rude to point with one finger. Disney doesn’t want guests thinking they are being talked down upon so Cast Members point with two fingers.

10.) Ever stand in line inside of Space Mountain and gaze up at the stars and see a giant asteroid or a cluster of three smaller asteroids go by? Well, you’re actually looking at magnified chocolate chip cookies with the chips taken out of them.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know that not all of these are confirmed by Disney and some will claim these to be untrue or different or what have you. It’s all in fun and they are still cool to check out.
